Ugmo, as Cal's mens ultimate team is known, made a strong case for itself as one of the top teams in the nation, and contender for the Northwest Region's sole bid to the 2003 National tournament, late in the fall of 2002, when Cal made semis at the preseason Classic City Classic tournament in Athens, GA.
As the official spring season began, Cal lived up to the promise, winning the Santa Barbara Invite and losing in finals in hard fought and particularly fun games at President's Day and Stanford Invite, against regional rivals Oregon and Stanford, respectively.
For spring break Cal sent a small team of 13 players cross-country to the highly touted Easterns tournament in Wilmington, North Carolina. In a showing indicative of both the team's strength that year and the exciting potential for upcoming seasons, the team of 13 (which included only two graduating players) made semis, where they came up short against a strong Stanford team once again.
After a tune-up weekend against largely club teams at DUI in Davis, Cal had a loss against UC-Davis in deteriorating weather at Sectionals, and then lost to both Stanford and UC-Santa Cruz in rescheduled Sectionals play the next week.
Having been dealt these disappointing defeats, Cal entered Regionals seeded second in their pool. In pool play, Cal failed to win the pool over UC-Davis, and subsequently lost to Stanford in quarters the next morning, ending their season.
